Your Hotel Black Friday Strategy Starts Now

Black Friday Is Now a Travel Moment

Black Friday began as a retail event, but travellers have learned to wait for it. Many now hold off booking next year's breaks until late November, expecting a deal. This year Black Friday falls on 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November, and the weeks leading up to it are when the decisions that shape your results are made.

Without a plan, the default outcome is predictable. The OTAs run heavily promoted sale campaigns, guests find your hotel inside them, and you fund the discount and the commission on the same booking. A clear hotel Black Friday strategy lets you capture that demand on your own terms.

Why Planning in Early November Matters

A good offer needs time to build. Rates have to be set, conditions agreed, the booking engine configured, the website and emails prepared and the campaign scheduled across channels. Starting in the final week usually means a rushed discount with no audience ready to receive it.

Your past guests need notice

Your most valuable Black Friday bookers are often people who already know you. Tell them early, give them a reason to watch for your offer and, ideally, a chance to book before the public sale begins.

Advertising costs rise near the date

Competition for paid search and social visibility intensifies close to Black Friday. Campaigns that are set up and learning before the peak tend to perform better than those launched at the last moment.

Choosing the Right Offer

Not every Black Friday promotion needs a headline discount. The best offer protects your rate position while giving guests a genuine reason to book direct.

| Offer type | How it works | Best for | |---|---|---| | Percentage discount | A time limited reduction on selected dates | Filling known low demand periods | | Added value | Breakfast, parking, spa credit or late checkout included | Protecting headline rates | | Stay longer | A free or discounted extra night | Increasing length of stay | | Member price | An exclusive rate for subscribers who sign up | Growing your guest database | | Gift vouchers | A bonus value on vouchers bought during the sale | Christmas gifting and future cash flow |

Whatever you choose, attach clear conditions: which stay dates apply, whether it is refundable and how long the sale runs. Target the dates you genuinely need to fill, rather than discounting periods that would sell at full price anyway, which is the same trap we described in the summer rate trap.

Make the Deal Easy to Book Direct

A strong offer only works if guests can find and book it without effort.

Put the offer front and centre

Feature the promotion on your homepage and in a banner across the site, linking straight to availability with the offer already applied. If a guest has to hunt for the deal or type a code they have forgotten, many will not bother.

Configure the booking engine properly

Promotional rates, restrictions, member pricing and countdown messaging all need to be set up and tested before launch. A capable booking engine, such as the Bookassist Booking Engine, lets you run time limited offers, show direct only benefits and keep the checkout fast when traffic peaks.

Keep your rate position clean

Check that your Black Friday rate is not undercut by an OTA promotion you have opted into elsewhere. Guests compare, and the channel with the better visible price will usually win the booking.

After the Weekend

Review the results while they are fresh: bookings, revenue, the stay dates you filled and the share that came direct. Those figures shape next year's offer and show which audiences responded, so each Black Friday is planned with more confidence than the last.

Check Your Direct Booking Readiness

Before the sale traffic arrives, run the free Direct Booking Health Score audit to see how ready your website and booking journey are to convert it. It takes a few minutes and shows where guests might leave for an OTA just when demand is at its highest.
